It is with great regret that today we have to announce the death of Detlev Albers, member of the INES advisory council. He died after short, but severe illness on Saturday 31 May 2008 aged 64.
Detlev Albers will be remembered as a man with principles and perseverance. He has set an example for generations of students as one of the leading members of the German student movement in 1968. Over the years he always cleaved to his principles becoming a distinguished and well respected member of democratic left-wing politics in Germany. From 1994 until 2004 he was the chair of the Social Democrats in the federal state of Bremen. Until recently Detlev Albers had also been a member of the federal board of the party.
Born in Goslar in the state of Lower Saxony, Albers graduated from a high school in Hamburg where he also persued his academic career studying social sciences and law. He later earned a doctorate in Berlin.
In 1979 he was appointed professor at the University of Bremen which would remain his academic home. In 2001 he founded the Forum for European Regional Policies Bremen. He devoted his life’s work to the cause of a united and yet diverse Europe. Also as INES we would like to express our gratitude for the continous support we have received in the last two years. In this moment our thoughts and sympathies are with his family.
