Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of becoming a member of INES?

Joining INES brings you a lot of benefits. You become part of an extensive network that stretches across many different countries. As our members all come from different backgrounds, you can profit from a very useful pool of knowledge. As INES, we try to help out each other, e.g. when looking for the right university, an internship position or even a job.

INES also offers interesting events about Europe. These are fun and exciting and an excellent opportunity to extend your own personal network by meeting new people working in your fields of interest. Our events are supposed to reach as many people as possible, thus contributing to a European public.

We offer professional training opportunities and support for applications for internships, jobs, or conferences.

Of course you also put your newly gaines skills into practice within the INES network. Organizing an event, taking charge of a coordination post oder founding a new regional group you will learn what it means to have responsibility for an own project and you will require leadership skills, which will surely be of use in throughout your whole life. Therefore it is our goal to give responsibilty to those active members who feel up to it as soon as possible as INES should be a place where you can also learn something about yourself and your abilities.

Last but by no means least, INES is also a forum through which you can publish your work making it available to others.

What is my membership fee used for?

Maintaining an organization like INES generates a certain amount of fixed costs. A large part of the membership fees is spent for administrative processes, such as the registration of INES as a non-profit organization. Apart from that, bills for phone calls, postage, stationery, brochures, this website, the bank account, meetings and – most importantly – content related activities have to be paid for. This we are using the membership fees for. We are spending every cent responsibly and in accordance with the INES statute and each year at the general members’ assembly a thorough report is given by the treasurer whose report then is checked by two independent cash auditors as well as the fiscal authorities. Like this we are hoping to create a maximum amount of transparency and trust.

Can I become a member of INES if I don’t live in Berlin or even Germany?

Believe it or not, but this is probably the most frequently asked question and it is very easy to answer: Yes, of course! The fact that the INES headquarter is in Berlin does not mean that all or even most of our members live there. In fact the network stretches over many different countries. As INES members tend to travel a lot, it is hard to keep track of where they are at the moment. So we are trying to live up to our name and make this not only a European, but an International Network for European Studies.
Wherever you are, we would be glad to welcome you as a member. Keep in mind that a network is only as strong and active as its members. So why not trying to establish a regional INES group at your university? We will be glad to help you with our experiences and best practices developed throughout the years.

Is it possible for an organization to join INES?

Every once in a while we are approached by other regional associations asking if they can become members to INES. Of course it is also possible for organizations to join INES, as this option is explicity foreseen by the INES statute. The membership fee then depends on the number of members in the organization which is willing to join. So if you are a representative of an organization and you are thinking about joining or cooperating with INES in one way or the other, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I would like to organize an event at my university, can INES help?

In the past INES has organized a number of small and large scale events. We want to share our knowledge and experiences and therefore we would be more than happy to help you organizing activities. Please get in touch with us and we will see how we can be of assistance to you.
